Examples of Activities that Count
  • Volunteering for community service organizations (501c3s, non-profits, etc.)
  • Spending quality time with unrelated elderly in a care facility (reading, singing, etc.)
  • Assisting unrelated elderly community members with household chores
  • Volunteering for church projects
  • Helping to improve school grounds
  • Shoveling sidewalks/raking for the unrelated elderly
  • Cleaning ditches or other public areas around the community
  • Assisting with Special Olympics
  • Assisting at a hospital, shelter, day care, or care facility
  • Beautifying community property
  • Volunteering for school sponsored activities (track meets, music contests, etc) not required by an organization or as a member of the team
  • Fundraising for a non-profit 501c3 organization (Salvation Army, American Red Cross, etc.)
  • Volunteering to help coach younger children in sports. 
  • Volunteering to tutor younger children
  • Volunteering as a camp counselor
  • Serving as a youth member of the School Board, Chamber of Commerce, City Council, or Church Council
  • Volunteering for a political campaign
  • Girl Scout or Boy Scout service hours
  • Confirmation/church service hours
  • Other activities approved by the Silver Cord Committee PRIOR to the completion of the activity
  • Activities during the school day require prior approval. Students may not miss class where credit is being earned to volunteer as part of the Silver Cord program. 
Examples of Activity that do NOT Count
  • Student-athletes leading a youth camp or activities for a sport in which they participate. For example, high school volleyball players may NOT earn Silver Cord hours for assisting with the middle school volleyball camp that occurs at the start of the year. 
  • Fundraising for personal benefit (FFA fruit sales, band raffle tickets, etc.)
  • Doing chores at home or helping family members around the house
  • Attending church, CCD, or Sunday school
  • Babysitting for a younger sibling 
  • Babysitting or dogsitting for individuals
  • Working on the family farm
  • Completing any task where you receive money
  • Doing extra credit homework
  • Participating in extracurricular activities
  • Court-ordered community service tasks
  • Minor acts of kindness (holding a door, etc.)
  • Internships/Apprenticeships
  • Self-awareness activities that only bring change to self
  • Family celebrations (graduations, weddings, etc.)
  • Working for free for a PROFIT organization
